News Corp opening plaque - September 24, 2014
Here at the Stone Sign Company, we consider it a real privilege to create a plaque for a new home. So you can imagine our sense of pride and excitement when we were approached by News Corp to produce a sign for their new home - a magnificent 17-story building nicknamed "The Baby Shard", which is to become their new London HQ.
These new headquarters will house some 3,400 News Corp employees and will become the fount of some of Britain's most influential newspapers including; The Times, The Sunday Times and The Sun. The building is located next to The Shard, near London's famous Tower Bridge, and is to be officially opened on the 16th of September by The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson.
To commemorate this historic occasion we were commissioned to create a plaque that would accurately represent News Corp’s long-term commitment to London and the UK. Fortunately, six generations of carving and crafting beautiful natural Welsh slate and stone signs has prepared us for such a task.
The result was a stunning 40cm x 30cm plaque crafted from the highest quality Welsh slate that we provide to all of our customers. The deeply engraved lettering was gilded in 23.5 carat English gold leaf. The plaque was then finished by hand, highlighting the natural features that make our materials unique. We also designed and commissioned the fabrication of a freestanding steel plinth to mount the plaque. The plinth was powder coated in RAL matched colour to ensure the highest level of quality throughout the project.
