Corpus Christi Welsh Slate Commemorative Plaques & Monolith

It's a privilege to be commissioned by an academic institution as prestigious as Corpus Christi, so you can imagine our sense of pride when we were asked to design, craft & install not one sign, but three! Not to mention engraving & gilding a huge Welsh slate monolith which now sits proudly in the College grounds.

The signs & monolith will signify the opening of their new accommodation for undergraduates named 'The Lampl Building' in honour of Sir Peter Lampl (Corpus Christi College, Chemistry 1966). As Founder of The Sutton Trust, Sir Peter worked tirelessly to improve the capacity of young people from non-traditional backgrounds to gain admission to and complete their education at Oxford and other leading universities. In recognition of his selfless support to education he was knighted in 2003.

These four pieces showcase some of the different options you can have with Welsh Slate: The Lampl Building was a large entrance sign, then there were two smaller plaques, one with the college emblem, and one with the details of the dedication. Each plaque was hand gilded with 23.5krt gold leaf making the three very different plaques come together as a lovely set. Finally, we created a Welsh slate monolith, with the college name and emblem engraved on a natural face, again gilded with stunning English gold leaf.

With Welsh slate being such a versatile material, there are many different options you can go down for your own project. With this project, we showed how Welsh slate can be used as an entrance sign, as a commemorative plaque, to reinforce your company or institutes brand identity, or to create striking monuments.
